Santa Clara was founded in 1777 but officially became a town in 1852. The city was named after the Mission Santa Clara de Asis. The actual mission is now where the Santa Clara University is housed.1 Located in the Silicon Valley, Santa Clara is home to Intel, Sun Microsystems, Agilent Technologies, and other high-tech industries. The Great America amusement Park is also located here. If you're into football, during the training season you can catch a glimpse of the San Francisco 49ers, as their headquarters and practice facility is located here. The city also owns and operates the Silicon Valley Power electric company. Since the electric company operates a new combined-cycle gas turbine it produces less expensive electricity for its residents than is offered by other utility companies in California. Santa Clara also has some biological resources for different habitats such as the burrowing owl which uses burrows that were created by ground squirrels.

Mental Health in Santa Clara

While the percentage of residents in Santa Clara County who have a mental illness is low, because of the large population of the county, there are actually tens of thousands of people who need mental health treatment. Overall, approximately 7 percent of Californians have had a major depressive episode in the last year. That rate jumps to 9 percent for children aged 12 to 17. Yet only about one-third of Californians who need mental health care seek it out.2

The Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County provide comprehensive mental health services to children, adults and the elderly. The charity provides assistance for those who are suffering from depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other common mental health issues. Most of the programs offered by the charity are funded by local, state or federal grants, so services are highly affordable, if not free. For additional information about the services provided by the Catholic Charities, call 408-468-0100.3

Current Initiatives

To combat the rising trend of people taking their own lives in Santa Clara County, the Suicide Prevention Initiative was put in place in 2012. Since then, the initiative has taken a multi-pronged approach to increasing community awareness about the warning signs and risk factors associated with suicide, as well as educating people about how to prevent it. The Santa Clary County Mental Health Department has partnered with the initiative to provide a hotline, as well as outreach services for the general public. Training is provided for volunteers who wish to work as part of the initiative. If you or someone you know is in a mental health crisis and is contemplating suicide, call 1-855-278-4204, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.4
